COSTA MESA - The St. John Bosco High School Varsity football team escaped Orange Coast College with a victory over the Servite Friars by the score of 27-26--and, one school of thought asserts over the game officials too!
Last year the Braves defeated the Friars 56-0 but the game this year would be dramatically different even though the outcome--a win--would be the same.
The Braves (6-0 overall, 1-0 league) had not played a game since September 21st--13 days earlier--vs Millilani in Hawaii and in several ways it showed especially on offense.
Numerous dropped balls by the wide outs and a continuation of penalties on the Braves essentially created three opponents: the Servite Friars, the game officials, and the Braves themselves.
One bright spot for the Braves was senior running back Nathaniel Jones who sat out his junior year last year because of injury but whose play this year is getting better every game. Jones had one TD but more importantly he has been difficult to bring down which allows the Braves offense to be more than just a predictable passing offense.
With the resurgence of Jones, opposing defenses cannot just key on the Bosco passing game solely but will also have to recognize play action and the associated running game.
